Rules & Format
Everything you need to play Sunday Showdown.
Sunday Showdown is a weekly 8-ball tournament on CueVerse.
At a glance
- Swiss format. The number of rounds depends on the field size.
- One rack per match.
- Win = 1 point. Loss = 0.
- A loss doesn’t knock you out.
- No rematches in the regular rounds.
- Tied for first at the end? A sudden-death playoff decides the champion.
Joining and format
- Want to play? Contact an admin.
- You must join before Round 1 is posted. Nobody can join after that.
- An event needs at least 4 players.
- The number of Swiss rounds depends on how many players enter. The planned total is set before Round 1. Swiss play can end early if another fair round can’t be made.
Playing your match
- Each round starts as soon as it’s posted in the Discord. Find your match on the Live View and start right away.
- Matches are numbered on the Live View: Match 1, Match 2, and so on. These are not CueVerse table numbers.
- A break-and-run is a normal win.
- After the rack, the winner reports it. Post your match number and the replay link in the 8brCam Community Discord, under Sunday Showdown > Match Report. The other player doesn’t need to do anything.
Who breaks
- Round 1
- CueVerse picks who breaks.
- Round 2 and later
- Live View tells you who breaks. The tournament balances breaks as fairly as possible.
- Wrong player?
- CueVerse picks on its own, so it can get it wrong. If it gives you the break and it isn’t yours, tap the cue ball. Your opponent gets ball in hand and breaks.
Points
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | 1 |
| Loss | 0 |
| Win by forfeit | 1 |
| Loss by forfeit | 0 |
| Both players forfeit | 0 each |
| Bye | ½ |
| You asked to sit out | 0 |
- Bye: if there’s an odd number of players, one player sits out each round and gets ½ point. You can only get one bye. If you’ve already won by forfeit, you won’t get one.
- Need to sit out a round? Tell an admin before that round’s matches are made. You get 0 points, but you can still get a bye later.
How pairings work
- Round 1: matches are drawn at random.
- After Round 1: you’re paired with someone on a similar score when possible. Repeat opponents are avoided. Sometimes you may play someone on a different score so everyone can be paired.
- Who gets the bye: usually the lowest-ranked player who hasn’t had one yet.
- A no-show or forfeit doesn’t count as playing each other. You could still meet that player later. A disconnect does count.
- If another fair round can’t be made under these rules, Swiss play may end early.
Standings and tiebreaks
Standings go by points. If players have the same points, we use:
- Buchholz
What is Buchholz?
If players have the same points, we look at how well their opponents did. Playing stronger opponents can give you a higher Buchholz score. It updates after each round is finished. Byes and forfeits are limited so they don’t give an unfair boost.
- Head-to-head: only if exactly two players are still tied. If one of them beat the other in a rack they actually played, that player ranks higher.
- Still tied? You share the place. Shared places show the same number, like 4, 4, 6.
Buchholz never decides the champion. If players tie for the most points, they go to the sudden-death playoff.
Tied for first? Sudden-death playoff
If two or more players finish with the most points, they play off for the title.
- One rack per match. Lose and you’re out.
- The winner of the Championship match is the Sunday Showdown champion.
- Players are seeded by Buchholz. If Buchholz is also tied, playoff seeding is random. The top seed plays the lowest seed.
- If the playoff doesn’t fill a complete bracket, the highest seeds advance directly to the next stage.
- You may play someone you already faced.
- Live View tells you who breaks, the same way as in the regular rounds.
- Only players still in the event can play off.
- The playoff doesn’t change anyone’s points. The Championship loser finishes 2nd.
- If the playoff can’t be finished that day, it shows as Championship pending and can be finished later. If it can’t be finished at all, it shows as Championship not completed, and no champion is named.
No-shows, disconnects and forfeits
| What happened | What it means | Result | Counts as playing each other? |
|---|---|---|---|
| No-show | A player isn’t there 10 minutes after the round is posted | Opponent wins by forfeit | No |
| Neither player shows | Nobody is there after 10 minutes | Both lose | No |
| Disconnect | A player drops and uses all 10 reconnect minutes for that match | Opponent may take a forfeit win. The match may continue if both players agree and an admin allows it. | Yes |
| Forfeit | A player gives up the match | Opponent wins by forfeit | No |
| Technical problem | CueVerse or the event has a problem | Stop and contact an admin. Nobody is forfeited just because of an outage. | Not applicable |
- The no-show clock starts when the round is posted. The Live View shows the deadline. If your opponent isn’t there, tell an admin.
- The disconnect clock gives each player 10 minutes in total per match to reconnect. If you disconnect more than once, the time adds together. If a player uses all 10 reconnect minutes, the opponent may take a forfeit win. The match may continue if both players agree and an admin allows it. This is separate from the no-show clock.
- If a rack stops before it finishes, the rack itself doesn’t decide the result. The disconnect or technical-problem rules apply instead.
Leaving the event
- Need to leave? Tell an admin.
- If your match isn’t finished, your opponent wins by forfeit.
- You won’t be paired again, and you can’t play in the playoff.
- Your earlier results still count.
Fixes and disagreements
- If a result was entered wrong, an admin fixes it and the standings update. Matches already played aren’t re-paired.
- Very rarely, a just-posted round may need to be corrected before anyone plays. Always use the current matchup shown on Live View.
- If the event has to stop early, the Live View will say so.
- Disagree with something? Tell an admin running the event right away. They follow these rules and record their decision.
- Any rule change starts with the next event.
